A Warm Welcome To My Practice

Good vision is key to a child’s effortless learning. As our eye’s lead our body, and 80-90% of all learning passes through the visual pathway, a healthy visual system is imperative to a development. Early detection of vision imbalances is crucial for preventing potential learning difficulties, school performance challenges, and overall quality of life. By partnering with a Behavioural Optometrist, you’re giving your child the best chance at healthy visual development.

My approach extends far beyond traditional eye exams. From firsthand experience with my own daughter, I understand that working with children requires a different level of care, patience, and expertise. My compassionate approach instantly puts the young ones at ease, making the eye care experience enjoyable and stress-free. A combination of a child centred approach and parent participation ensures the best outcome for your child.

About ME

From Milestones Missed to Milestones Met: A Journey of Vision and Learning

My passion for supporting children with learning difficulties began with my own daughter's journey. Early in her development, she struggled with basic motor skills like crawling, hopping, skipping, and riding a bike. She couldn't sit at her desk properly or hold a pen, and she missed all her developmental milestones. She faced challenges in reading and writing, which led me to explore ways to help her. Through this journey, I discovered that my field of Optometry had a significant role in addressing learning difficulties.

Fast forward to today, 15 years later, she is a healthy, happy teenager who has met all her milestones. Did you know that 80-90% of learning passes through the visual pathway, and this involves much more than just having 6/6 vision? Reflecting on this journey fills me with immense joy and pride. Happy mom and daughter moment!

Behavioural Optometry

What is the Role of a Behavioural Optometrist?

Fun Fact: 80-90% of all learning passes through the Visual Pathway. A Behavioural Optometrist assesses and treats vision problems that affect how your child interacts with their environment. They go beyond assessing if your child can see clearly; they evaluate how the eyes work together, track and focus, which can impact learning, reading and overall development. They consider whether your child’s Primitive Reflexes are integrated, allowing for the higher order development to occur. They consider the root cause of reading and comprehension difficulties, reversals, poor concentration, copying down information correctly, and many other vision related tasks. Even the ability to sit still at the desk for the required duration of time can be traced back to the visual system. Collating the data, together with a comprehensive case history, observations, and your child’s behaviour provide us a roadmap to diagnose, design treatment plans, guide therapy, and evaluate outcomes. This holistic approach to the visual process opens many options for lifelong, quality patient care.

What is Vision?

Vision is more than just seeing small objects at a distance (eyesight). It involves organizing light input, recognizing spatial relationships, and building an internal representation of reality.

This internal representation helps you make decisions about: 1. What actions to take and 2. How precisely to execute these actions

To achieve this, your body extracts vast amounts of information from nearly all parts of the body and uses all available sensory inputs from the external world. This information is then integrated into a unified whole. While eyesight allows you to see the road, vision enables you to navigate safely across it.
